If you are interested in new technology and where it fits into our libraries, then there are two events in early February that you shouldn’t miss. Today (Friday, 30 November) is a significant deadline for both.

VALA – the Victorian Automated Libraries Association – holds their biennial conference in at the Melbourne Convention Centre from 5 – 7 February 2008. The theme this year is “Libraries: Changing spaces, Virtual places “. Early bird registration closes today.

.
ALIA’s Web 2.0: Beyond the Hype symposium is just before VALA at QUT Gardens Point campus in Brisbane from 1-3 February 2008. You can get up to $250 discount for presenting a “Hot Topic” paper or a Poster session. But – submissions close today, so you’d better get them in.

UPDATE:  VALA Earlybird registration has been extended to Friday 7th December 2007.

Such a shame they’re so close to each other! I would have loved to go to both but was committed to VALA by the time the other was announced.

Yes, it is…but BTH costs substatially less than VALA – $170 (speaker rate) compared to $540 (speaker rate). For those of us in isolated states, it’s a bit of a bonus – not that much extra to fly between Brisbane and Melbourne – compared to the flights for two individual events in citites on the Eastern seaboard.
