Increased access to e-resources for Aussies!

Posted May 30th 2007 @ 2:30 pm by Peta Hopkins

The National Library of Australia has recently launched ERA (Electronic Resources Australia). This consortium offers Australian libraries an opportunity to provide free online access to information in the areas of health, news, business and general reference, for their members.
An open discussion list has been established for librarians to exchange information about ERA, and the website [...]

Dial a story

Posted May 26th 2007 @ 1:23 pm by Peta Hopkins

Here’s an idea from Campbell County Public Library. They have implemented a 24×7 recorded story service, users can just dial on their telephone. Each story lasts just a few minutes.

Michelle’s Library Vision

Posted May 12th 2007 @ 8:28 am by tango

To get the ball rolling and get some inspiration going for our “Get creative for May competition“, the Libraries Interact team is going to share some of its vision for the future of libraries (at least until 2010). Here I am sharing where I think my library, which is a public library, will be in [...]

Librarianship, social-democratic vision and managerialism

Posted March 31st 2007 @ 8:47 am by Matthew Nogrady

Here’s a reference for a good old-fashioned print resource that I urge librarians to get hold of. Buschman comes from a ‘critical theory’ perspective, so is putting libraries in the context of:

‘information capitalism’
New Managerialism/New Public Management/the New Public Philosophy
the commodification of information
private-sector models of public service provision
encroachments on the progressive, social democratic role of libraries
factors [...]

‘Radical trust’ in the library

Posted March 7th 2007 @ 2:14 pm by Matthew Nogrady

Apologies to those who linked and networked to http://del.icio.us/actplreference. It’s now been taken down, as administrators in my library were concerned about things being put up in its name without departmental approval. Most of the same links are available on http://del.icio.us/frightfullynew.
This got me thinking about all of the trust issues for librarians in Library2.0. It [...]

A view from Hong Kong

Posted January 1st 2007 @ 6:44 am by Peta Hopkins

I recently had a family holiday in Hong Kong. We were kept up-to-date by copies of the South China Morning Post, kindly provided by our Hotel. It’s always interesting to read foreign newspapers to get a different view of the world, and it was refreshing to find that the Ashes test was not dominating the [...]

Messages about libraries on TV

Posted November 25th 2006 @ 1:46 pm by Peta Hopkins

Recently there have been two advertisements on television that are funny, but irk me because of the messages they are giving or not giving.
The Telstra Bigpond ad “Too many rabbits” has a voiceover at the end “Give your kids the right answers, get them broadband.” Will someone please grab that Dad and tell him that [...]

Posted November 24th 2006 @ 2:22 pm by genevieve tucker

News arising - forwarded from the RMIT students mailing list (and also from the ALIA Vic list) I have received the following information about a Victorian public libraries initiative which I thought should be posted here, where all the 2.0 crowd tend to gather.
Dear colleagues
What’s the best part of a conference? Most people agree it’s [...]
