Ebook readers for loan or use in Australian Libraries

Posted May 18th 2011 @ 4:01 pm by Kathryn Greenhill

Last year I asked which libraries were lending downloadable ebooks to their users.

During a workshop about ebooks today, a student asked me whether it is common for public libraries in Western Australia to lend out ebook readers, or to have some that they let the public use.

I knew of a few libraries, but it made me wonder how many libraries across Australia are doing this.

Is yours? Do you know of one?

If so, please share.  Add to the comments on this post:

  • library name
  • library type
  • device(s)
  • if staff only , users in library only or lent out.
  • (Extra points if you give a URL with further info).

Yes, we do. At Victoria Park Library we have 2 kobo e-readers for loan since last Dec, very very very popular. We will be releasing ipad (the first edition). And yes, to take it home and use it for 3 weeks, just like the books/dvds etc.

Curses. No – ours (cockburn) doesn’t as of yet. But we’re working on it. As with seemingly every aspect it’ll be good to point to other libraries that are doing it to convince the powers that be that it’s a good idea.
