Be inspired by this personal library

The photographs in this Wired Magazine article are inspirational. The article is about Jay Walker’s private library. Can we make our institutional libraries more like this?

“About a dozen years ago, my collection got so big that I said, ‘It’s
time to build a room, a library, that would be about human
imagination.” — Jay Walker

That is truly the most amazing library I’ve ever seen! I’d love to see it in person, but apparently that will never happen. Those pictures are great!

Heaven forbid that our institutional libraries become more like this one. On the shelves of Walker’s library I see a lot of books facing the viewer with their covers, not with their spines, as usual. This means that books are used primarily for decoration. It also means that for every book strategically placed like that there are 4-5 books totally covered and obscured by it. Not to mention that there are too many curiosities in Walker’s library that draw attention away from the books.
