What have you found in a book?

Unnameable Books, a Brooklyn bookstore, recently featured in Gothamist after they created an in-store display of all the oddities they have found in used books. Also mentioned in the post was the discoveries that AbeBooks have made over time.

So let’s share - what have you found in returned library books/secondhand books or… your own books?

I wish I could say I have some exciting discoveries but beyond train tickets, receipts or other patrons return slips I’m yet to be so lucky!

From my great-aunt’s poetry book (either Adam Lindsay Gordon, Tennyson, or Browning, I can never remember which one it was in), an old envelope from the Shamrock Hotel in Birchip (has anyone been there?), which looks about eighty years old.
Great idea for a post, Jenelle, and thanks for those links.

    Biscuits - not nice.
In an old book in an old collection not touched for years, an old postcard, fading beautifully, of the dining hall at Oxford. I swear they modelled the Harry Potter movies on that dining hall!

Actually, they weren’t only modelled on Oxford, they actually shot some of the Harry scenes there. There’s various spots around Oxford that feature in the movie, and no doubt provided some inspiration for the books themselves.
