More on Internet Filtering in Australia

Sue Hutley updates us on what ALIA is doing about the proposed Internet filtering in Australia:

Roxanne Missingham and I are meeting with Senator Conroy’s advisor this Thursday.  Derek Whitehead as Chair of the Online Content Advisory Committee and Vice-president is also very involved in this issue.

There will also be more information on our advocacy webpages during 2008,  and a new column in inCite called ‘Your Association at work’  which gives you some of the snippets of the many other things on the go.”

You check out ALIA’s media release(s) on the issue at http://www.alia.org.au/media.room/

Also check out the new Communications Legislation Amendment (Content Services) Act of 2007 - which applies to publishers of Australian commercial internet content, requiring them to protect minors from adult content on the web.  It came into force on January 20th and uses the same system of ratings that is used for movies. Check out the Restricted Access System Declaration on the Australian Communications and Media Authority website as well as 2 good write-ups of the implications on the Ars Technica and Mashable blogs.
