Expressions of interest are now open for Information Online 2009 - one of Australian libraryland’s two techie conferences. It happens biennially in Sydney, alternating with VALA in Melbourne.
Another date to add to your diary - 20 - 22 January 2009. The call for papers deadline is 28 March 2008
(Just an aside about library tech conferences worldwide - with such early submission dates, speakers present papers about technology that is at least 10 months out of date. The official part of the program becomes a retrospective, rather than a showcase for new ideas. Yes, the informal communication in the hallways is up to date - but it seems that the gap between this and the papers is getting larger in relation to rate of change in the field.
This isn’t a criticism of Information Online or the organisers - people do need to plan these things.)
Here’s their announcement from the site:
Information Online 2009 is only 18 months away. If you want to exhibit, sponsor, interested in submitting a paper, or want to attend Information Online 2009 click here for the expression of interest form.

That delay can be a problem for conferences. However, the paper that I presented at the last Info Online was written in the 5 months prior to the presentation, but wasn’t finalised until about December. Presented in February - so it was fairly up to date.
We just had to get the abstract accepted earlier. We tried to write an abstract that would cater for future evenutalities.
There was no peer-review process to accommodate for Info Online so the currency of presentations and papers might be better than VALA, but VALA may have a better quality of writing.
