MIT’s del.icio.us virtual reference

If you want to see a real life example of a library using a social bookmarking service as a content management system…

Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries is using del.icio.us to manage the virtual reference page on their website. Librarians add a bookmark in del.icio.us and give each one tags to assign the link to particular categories such as “statistics”, “dictionaries” or “weather”.  The links are then syndicated to the Library’s website using the RSS feed and FeedDigest.

Each bookmark in del.icio.us appears in each category it has been tagged for without someone having to update the Virtual Reference page. In this way building content is shared amongst a number of staff who do not have to rely on the website administrator to update the page.

At Bond University, the news headlines on the Library homepage are syndicated from the Library’s blog.  In a similar way, the content creation for the news is shared amongst a number of librarians and the home page does not have to be updated each time. It uses feed2js to syndicate the content.

Anyone got any other examples?
