Is your library running an emerging technology education program? I’d like to hear from you.
I facillitate a Library Emerging Technology Group at Murdoch University and run a fortnightly session on new technologies. It is a hands-on session in a library PC lab. We also do pilot projects to assess new technologies. This grew out of an immersive learning project, MULTA, that we ran from June to August last year. We’ve covered topics like:
- Getting a gmail account and useful google tools
- YouTube and Libraries
- Podcasting
- Wikipedia
- Creating a PBwiki
- RSS and google reader
- Creating an avatar, and eduational sites in Second Life
This morning I discovered the slq library2.0 wiki from the program being run by the State Library of Queensland. I already know about the learning projects at Edith Cowan University and the Yarra Plenty Library, both based on Helene Blowers’ Learning2.0 (23 Things) at the Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenberg County.
It made me think that maybe there are many libraries either running something like this or planning to. I’d love to contact some of the people involved and discuss things like how to get staff buy in, what topics are worth covering, how to sustain momentum and what you do after the program is finished. Maybe a skype party call or a google group or something even less formal…
Feel free to email me: k.greenhill at murdoch dot edu dot au or leave a comment here summarising what you did and a link to your site.

Quite surprisingly, one of our school technology teachers picked up on this - and is running a program for his school staff. All supported by workshops for those who want on “multimedia mondays”. Works in all sorts of environments beyond just libraries - wherever there is a group organisation! Helen really started something off - should get some kind of award for this innovation
