Here is a cool idea for ALIA! The Library and Information Technology Association are in election mode at present. They are presenting a podcast of messages from candidates via their blog.
So next time around we might see/hear candidates for ALIA elections spruiking about themselves and their views on the profession.
Each post has a photograph, plus audiorecording of around 5 minutes. This would add a whole new dimension to evaluating candidates. How well do they communicate verbally?
Link to Mary Alice Ball’s podcast on LITA. The audio is a recording of an interview with a candidate for Director at Large.

You should send this on to the Board of ALIA. Fantastic idea. Trust LITA to come up with this one!
What I also like about ALA elections: you can vote online and by paper. Sure, the interface is nasty, but it makes it more accessible to more members I think. Their voting rates have increased since online voting was introduced.
I also like the candidate forums that NMRT runs. There’s a whole committee devoted to nominations, which collections questions for those running and and posts answers to the list, so you get to know more about each person than just their statement.
So pleased to see that for the first time, both ALIA president-elect candidates have a blog. That’s definitely moving things in the right direction.
ALA and ALIA elections come up at the same time every year (I’m a member of both). ALA’s takes longer for me to fill out because of the number of offices I can vote for, but I find it a little more participatory overall.
