I quickly get bored and exit when I don’t find anyone in SL.

Tonight, however, I ended up sitting around a table at the Kansas State Library Virtual branch, chatting with two librarians who were both giving tours to rooms full of people in RL. Rocky is a librarian from Kansas. Cyberbob is a librarian at a technical library in Denmark.

We discussed the possibility of somehow integrating SFX into a SL library building to create a kind of reading room. I don’t understand enough about SFX to know whether that would work. I mentioned that I want to find out how the Medical Library at Healthinfo Island has installed a health info google CSE as a service. They consider it a breakthrough that they didn’t need to use the HUD. No idea what the HUD is and why it’s a breakthrough, but I intend to find out.

    Dear Kathryn…

What a shock to see my avatar’s name on google when I tried it as a joke this afternoon… and there I (Rocky Vallejo) was… sitting around the table with you, BrianA Corleone and the gentleman from Denmark, CyberBob. Gosh… I need to lose some weight!

I wasn’t able to pay much attention to the conversation online as I was giving a “tour” of the State Library Virtual Branch to the staff at the State Library of Kansas (Real Life Branch). It was the first time several of them had ever seen our efforts within SecondLife though about half the staff has joined SL and is starting to participate in the process of bringing a library presence to the virtual world.

Always a pleasure to see you, Emerald! My best to you and your colleagues at the Oz Library just down the Yellow Brick Road from the Kansas Library next door.

    Hi Rocky from Kansas-City-where-everything-is-up-to-date.

You’re googling your av? I just did mine, but found no suprises.

It’s so good that your staff are getting involved. Have they shown more interest now the branch is up and running? Where else did you take them? Did your staff members think we’d rigged it when I turned up?

See you next time we’re being SL librarians together.

Thanks for the pingback to your blogpost.
That is a really nice thought about getting a kind of sfx into SL!
A HUD is a HeadsUp Display, a wearable in SL. You can get one for free at INfoISland , the special Library Search HUD, is going to include search for all resources offered throught Sl libraries, kind of a catalogue, but also in Wordlcat, Google, Amazaon, anything in fact.
There is also a info kiosk, that will have a new display and search features (have a look at slqueries.com)which display the results on screen, readable for anyone.
Hope to meet you soon inworld, regards, Namro

    Emerald…

I’ve been kept very busy since we gave the tour of the Kansas Library helping staff get into SL. I would guess that about 2/3 of the staff are now SecondLifers.

Right now most of our folks are more interested in learning how to walk, chat and fly short distances…. Many crash landings! I have taken a few to Svarga… a wonderful nature area in SL.

We’re having part of our next managers’ meeting in the Kansas Virtual Branch next week. I hear that you all are having a party on the 13th December. Wish we could be there but we’ll be sound asleep! Our best to you.

Two thirds of the staff is phenomenal. I bet some of it is due to your encouragement.

I always crash land when I stop flying. This is SL..so I just laugh at my av. and pick myself up. Should I be worried about this behaviour, I wonder?

We’d love to see you at the party, but understand that sleep MAY just be a bit more attractive than a party with librarians :) . We’ll be popping over to your library just before we chill out at our library, I checked it out with Cindy first, of course.
