Ever attended a virtual Christmas party before? I certainly haven’t, and I hope you’ll join me for my first one - Kathryn and I are hoping to welcome you all to our building in Cybrary City, Info Island, Second Life!
When? Wednesday 13 December 2006. 6pm - 8pm WST (this is 1am PST/Second Life time).
Where? The Australian Libraries building, at 207, 68, 23. Or log in and IM Paradoxa Kurrajong (me) or Emerald Dumont (Kathryn) and we’ll teleport you over.
Picture: Paradoxa (blue hair) and Emerald (green dress) in the library building with a visitor, Walty. Emerald is trying to figure out where to put the couch.
Why? For the sheer fun of it, and because it’s Christmas! It’s a pity you don’t all live in the Best City in Australia, but thanks to technology we can still meet up! We’re also hoping Second Life Librarian Lorelei Junot will come along to say hello and tell us a bit about Second Life Library. (6pm WST will be 3am her time so it is very gracious of her to say she’ll try and be there!)
Let us know if you’ll be there (leave a comment or email us - librarian at librariesinteract dot info). Would you like to know more about Second Life? (Do we need to post a few how-tos here?)
November 15, 2006 at 08:15
I’ll try to be there! It’ll be the day of our RL Xmas party too, so I hope Midjen doesn’t look too hungover when she logs in …
Mind you, I haven’t found the building yet. I managed to get to Cybrary City but that’s my limit. The nav points aren’t coming up with anything … I did bump into a Talis librarian though who suggested putting an Australian flag on the top of the building. I’ve dutifully passed the message on now!
Now I just need to persuade my Mac to run the damn software!!
November 15, 2006 at 08:31
How about a large neon sign saying “Australian Libraries”? It’s there and it’s garish and it’s the only one we could find last night. We’ll change it when we get skills.
We’re next to State Library of Kansas.
Now..we’ll need to find christmas decorations…..
November 15, 2006 at 09:25
Is the name searchable? See, am demonstrating SL newbieness already
I’ll try taking a stroll there over lunchtime
(MY lunchtime). Then I’ll find a chair and hang out until more things can happen …
November 15, 2006 at 10:09
Good on ya, infoaddict! Are you free this weekend? I’ll have to see if I can log in sometime over the weekend (more friendly times for US folks too). Maybe we should try and meet up sometime on Saturday or Sunday.
You have SL installed on your work PC?? I wonder if work would let me…
Oh, and thanks for the suggestions re a flag and making the building more obvious. We’ll have to see what we can do. As Kathryn says we do have a sign up on the roof, but maybe we can turn the building into a ‘landmark’ too. (We’re all learning here!)
November 15, 2006 at 11:30
I have SL installed on the standalone. Not on my main desktop.
I have dragged myself away. Oh, that’s a SCARY place …
November 15, 2006 at 22:12
I’d certainly appreciate some how-to’s, so if anyone has any time……
November 16, 2006 at 12:11
Carolyn, we’ll see what we can come up with! Hope to see you there
November 18, 2006 at 13:16
Infoaddict is so correct about it being a scary place!
My family are starting to claim they are SL orphans, and I only joined it yesterday evening *wry grin*
I did find the Australian Library, and somehow it has acquired a cat … interesting!
November 18, 2006 at 17:03
Yes, the cat was a gift from Walty when showing us how to add things to the building. I’ve asked him if he’ll move his coffee table…but the cat, well like all good strays I’ve become kind of attached to.
Check out the reading nook I made and tell me what you think.
Then tell my husband and kids that the time spent doing it was all worthwhile :)..they were watching and they loved it..but still…
November 19, 2006 at 11:03
Hi, I like the harp and the nook, still working out why you have the telescope?
I have found that the times I have been logging in there have not been anyone around, any suggestions as to good times to go in?
November 19, 2006 at 11:23
Alethea, uh oh…
TB nice to see you here!
Yes, it can be hard to find people in Second Life (one of my gripes about it) - the time zone factor means that a lot of the Americans are not on when we are, which is why we are hoping to have this event. Are you going to be able to come along?
November 19, 2006 at 12:50
Hi TB good to see you’re here..and that you’ve made it there.
The Kansas Library people next door are very friendly and helpful and ALWAYS seem to be there. They’ll even give you a free T-Shirt.
Anyone interested in meeting at the SL library building tonight? (Sunday 19th November) at 9pm W.A. Time? That’s the earliest I can reliably make it, but I can try to pop in earlier.
I’d love some other people to put some bits and pieces in the building…or give some ideas…I’m really just fiddling to get used to the environment.
I’m setting up a separate blog to hang off LINT for the “nuts ‘n’ bolts” info about the project. We’re still trying to work out what to call it. Any ideas?
November 19, 2006 at 14:32
Thanks CW and Kathryn, I plan to be at the event,on the 13th its after 8th so the evening school stuff will have finished by then.
Kathryn, I will try to get there tonight…Hypatia Arcadia sort of goth looking in black…:-)
Suggestion on the name…
How about “Flying with ALG @ 2nd Life”
November 20, 2006 at 06:14
Well that went well. 4 of us managed to make it to the Oz library at the same, despite a 3 hour time difference. Feeling a bit tired now
November 20, 2006 at 09:27
Yes..godd fun. And Hypatia pointed out…the Oz library is next to Kansas Library. And then I realised this morning that I’m Emerald, as in “Emerald City”.
Maybe we should build a yellow brick road between the buildings
November 20, 2006 at 10:45
‘ello all; sorry, I can’t get on during weekends at the moment, so it’s only lunchtime AEST that I’m around. My Mac can’t support the software …
Chuffed at the though we’ve acquired a library cat. There used to be a website documenting library cats - I wonder if SL ones count??
For the “nuts’n'bolts” project, what about SLlibsAU, or variations on the “second life libraries Australia” theme? Or even virtuallibsau?
November 22, 2006 at 10:04
btw, for a REALLY impressive Library, see the Health Library at 171,226,39 (it’s on its own island called HealthInfo Island). Direct PubMed searches with results that float in front of you, entire rooms on one topic … as a health/medical librarian myself (well, in the past and in the future; just not right now), I am VERY impressed.

The Alliance people have put a notecard on the porch of our building with a guide to prims. Our land has a “prim budget” , which limits the number of physically complicated objects we can have there. The bookshelves are 1 prim, the cat was 31 prims..so I’ve asked Walty to remove it .
Here’s the notecard. We hope the blog we are making to put this type of stuff will be ready by next week:

Please contact Lorelei Juneot or Abbey Zenith with any questions.
We thought this might be helpful to those of you moving in
=============================
Moving In a Prim Primer: The quick guide to setting up your area or your library.
=============================
Objects in Second Life are made up of what are known as primitives or prims for short. Each object you see is made up of prims. Sims (areas of SL) have a limit to the number of prims that can be tolerated by a server. This is one of the reasons that Sims are divided up into parcels.
Your parcel will have a prim limit. To find out what your prim limit is, right click on your land, go to About Land and then click on the Objects tab. You will see the number of Primitives Parcel Supports (maximum you can have on your parcel) and below it you will see Primitives On Parcels (what you actually have).
To find out how many prims are in a piece of furniture or object you want to use, right click on the object and go to Edit (if you see a tiny pop up with a button that says More, click it to expand the window). On the General tab about middle way down the pop up window , you should see the number of primitives. It will say something like “1 Object, 5 Primitives”.
Some of the smallest objects on SL can have a high prim count. To learn more about prims and how to make objects you can take one of the classes that Eiseldora Reisman is offering. As always, feel free to contact me or Lori if you need help
Also, to cut down on lag the Land Manager, Brackish Ludwig has asked that we not use any particle producing objects, except on special occasions.

The party sounds like a fun idea! I was thinking of crashing (not being an Australian librarian, but a Canadian one). Then I figured out your party is running 4 am - 6 am my time. Eep! Well, if I can’t sleep maybe I will show up.
Please do report back, though, in case us onlookers can’t make it.
Cheers,
Canadian Connie

What’s SL for if not to join in parties held by people in different time zones and in different parts of the world?? You’d be welcome..but probably not too awake
Glad to know others are interested and we’ll definitley let you know how it went…probably with a summary here on LINT and more detail on VLINT
