There are no plans to blog every day here, but if anyone wants to try writing a post without setting up their own blog, please register and writings on any LIS topic are welcome.

If you want to join in, let @flexnib know so she can add you to the list.

If you want to follow along then you can add everyone on the afore-mentioned list into your favourite RSS feed reader or follow her Twitter list – as participants will probably tweet when they have posted.

Or take a look at the #blogjune tag board which captures tweets, instagrams, facebook updates, and more with the hashtag #blogjune.

Or, I’ve subscribed to all the participant blogs and shared the feeds on this my Netvibes page.

It may not have been considered such a clumsy method back in ancient times when the pantheon was as familiar to the audience as mobile phones are to us.

026 - Libraries for Specific Subjects

I’d like to hear more about Australian special libraries and their collections. If anyone is interested in telling the world about their special library, you can always write a post for us on Libraries Interact and share a photo or two. Special libraries often have small, specialised communities of users and perhaps there is less of a need to promote it more widely. Maybe that’s why I found it a challenge to find a photo (with CC licence) for this trading card.

I ended up using a photo that I took at the Sunshine Coast University Library – not actually a library for a specific subject – but interesting objects on their shelves.

I think this was when there was a user group meeting for Ex Libris products at the State Library of Victoria. I know that Dave Allen from SLQ accompanied me on a wander around the library when I took this photo, so it was either that or maybe a VALA conference.

Accelerating Performance: Powerful New Techniques to Develop People by Sunny Stout Rostron

Front Cover
“In training there are two distinct camps emerging – those who cling doggedly to traditional training approaches and those who have thrown away the rule book and are assembling a personal toolkit of techniques drawn from a wide range of training options including storytelling, drama, music, accelerated learning, NLP techniques and more. This volume assesses each of the new techniques available and explains their use and impact. Seeking to allow anyone involved in performance improvement and staff development to develop their own blended learning toolkit – where a variety of techniques provide a flexible array of training solutions – the text offers both practical advice and detailed case studies showing each particular technique in use.” — blurb

Another cataloguing tale from the 20th century. When my library moved from card catalogues to an online public access catalogue it was pretty exciting, but a little frustrating. Although the capability was there for we cataloguers to create records directly in the system, we had to use a paper worksheet to write the details against various MARC tags. These would then be entered into the system by a typist! We had to use the online system to look up works in the inventory, compare subject headings, identify if the author was already in the system or not, but just not allowed to create new records.

It was more about change management than about efficiency in those early days. I was very pleased when we could eventually work directly on those records.
