But that is beside the point. What is ANZ 23 Mobile Things?

ALIA NGAC (Australian Library and Information Association New Generation Advisory Committee) and New Professionals Network NZ have teamed up to offer an Australian/New Zealand course based on the 23 Mobile Things course by Jan Holmquist. We are running this course from May-November 2013 and it currently has over 500 participants signed up! Come and join us in our learning journey.”

Over 500 of your Australian and New Zealand colleagues have already signed up and there are  opportunities to do more than just participate. Check out the ANZ 23 Mobile Things blog, the Facebook page and Twitter feed (@anz23mthings), but do so now, because we are in Week 0 – the learning begins next week!

What is this NZ/Australian cohort all about?

simple; it is just establishing a group of librarians in NZ and Australia who are keen to do the 23 Mobile Things at the same time. This cohort will give us mutual support and contact with each other so that we can learn together and keep each other motivated. Hopefully it will help you grow your own personal learning network (PLN) and have fun and great collaborations throughout the course!

Who can take part?

Anyone! This is not limited to New Professionals, but is open to anyone who would like to take part – whether newer or older to the profession. I have just put the contact form on the New Professionals blog as that is a place where I know many people will find it. We are creating another blog specifically for this NZ/Australian cohort that will be the hub of our conversations and connections. So please sign up and let’s all learn from one another and have fun playing with mobile technologies! Over 60 people have signed up already; this is going to be such a fantastic group to be a part of :D   (It’s mainly NZ’ers at the moment so come on Australian’s sign up!)

What do I need to take part?

  • Access to a mobile device (e.g. iPad, tablet, smart-phone, etc…) – if you don’t have one yourself, you could borrow one or use the PC applications to understand the general principles.
  • Time to dedicate to investigating the 23 things – it seems most people are keen to do 1 Thing a week so you can dedicate as much or as little time as you need to exploring that thing and engaging in chatting and collaborating with others on the course.
  • Willingness to collaborate, experiment, and support each other – it’s going to be fun!

How do I sign up?

So you’re keen? Great! Here’s what you have to do to get involved:

We will be in touch as we create a blog as a hub for the group, a Facebook group (if you are keen) and organize some online real-time events such as Twitter chats and Google+ hangouts so that we can chat and collaborate. It will also give us an opportunity to put into practice what we have been learning!

We are hoping to start with Thing 1 the first week of May. If the course runs for six months (approximately 1 Thing a week), it will finish at the end of November.

So what are you waiting for? Sign up today and we will be in touch again a bit closer to the date.

If you want more information please don’t hesitate to email me (Kate) at my gmail account (take off the no spam) or on twitter at @katejf.

Abigail Willemse (NZ) and Kate Freedman (NGAC) and Hiba Kanji (NGG)(AUS)

VALA 2010 Boot Camp http://librariesinteract.info/2009/12/08/vala-2010-boot-camp/ http://librariesinteract.info/2009/12/08/vala-2010-boot-camp/#comments Tue, 08 Dec 2009 10:51:05 +0000 Michelle http://librariesinteract.info/?p=1189 As an adjunct to the VALA 2010 Conference, a series of special ‘techie’ sessions is being run under the title of VALAtech Boot Camp.

The five sessions will be run over 4 days and include:

  • OCLC API Mashathon
  • Video: Negotiating the Online and Mobile Space
  • Semantic Web APIs
  • Open Source Content Management Systems – Joomla!
  • Open Source Content Management Systems – Drupal

Being techie, they require some knowledge and equipment. The sessions are individual, so you don’t have to attend them all.  All but the OCLC API Mashathon are running on VALA2010 conference days, so you need to keep this in mind also.

As places are strictly limited, I highly recommend you check out the details at the VALA Website and get your application in as soon as possible, for whichever session(s) you choose.

Cataloguing and library graduates http://librariesinteract.info/2008/04/15/cataloguing-and-library-graduates/ http://librariesinteract.info/2008/04/15/cataloguing-and-library-graduates/#comments Tue, 15 Apr 2008 02:14:55 +0000 Peta Hopkins http://librariesinteract.info/?p=467 The Australian Committee on Cataloguing (ACOC) has released its position statement on the coverage of cataloguing in courses providing an initial qualification in library and information management.

The statement including an extract from the Educational Policy statements of the Association for Library Collections & Technical Services is available from the ACOC site.  This extract contains a list of knowledge and skills required for intellectual access and information organization.

ACOC: Overview

“ACOC holds that ALIA-recognised courses must provide their graduates with a “knowledge of cataloguing tools and sources of bibliographic records and how to use them” so that graduates can indeed use key cataloguing tools and apply basic bibliographic standards.” — Position Statement

What are you doing with your extra day in 2008, February 29? Would you like to spend it participating in an introductory leadership workshop, whilst being exposed to the knowledge and wisdom of many leaders in the library and information industry? A group of fellow Victorian Aurorians have put together a cost recovery workshop for you to, “Leap into Leadership” that allows you to gain an experience to drive your leadership learning further. The workshop will be led by distinguished Victorian based facilitator Greg Cook, who has conducted leadership training for the State Library of Victoria and various Public Library Services across Victoria. There will be a panel session where some noteable (to be announced soon) leaders from a variety of library sectors will share their personal insights on leadership with you. The aims of the workshop are to:

  • provide a framework to assist participants to identify their own leadership styles;
  • provide role models by having a panel of highly experienced leaders talk about their leadership;
  • provide opportunity for participants to work in small groups to discuss and consolidate their learning with the support of experienced leaders.

The workshop is aimed at participants who are new to leadership and wish to develop their leadership style. This is a rare opportunity to learn about leadership with respected industry leaders and a highly qualified facilitator. Librarians, Library Technicians, recent graduates and students from ALL sectors are encouraged to participate. Other important details:

Self-paced learning for library workers http://librariesinteract.info/2007/11/26/self-paced-learning-for-library-workers/ http://librariesinteract.info/2007/11/26/self-paced-learning-for-library-workers/#comments Sun, 25 Nov 2007 22:30:03 +0000 Peta Hopkins http://librariesinteract.info/2007/11/26/self-paced-learning-for-library-workers/ There are now a number of sites which have developed their own ’23 things’ type staff development activities. In many cases these programs are openly accessible and encourage anyone to join in.

23 things

This one really got the ball rolling, with a 9-week program for staff at PLCMC. It listed 23 Things (or small exercises) that you can do on the web to explore and expand your knowledge of the Internet and Web 2.0.

There is a long list of sites that are doing similar programs and many of these will be helpful for the motivated self-learner or for those tailoring a similar program for their library. On the list are a heap of Australian sites, including those participating in the state-wide program in Victoria.

This is a sample of sites from different sectors that have modified the 23 things program (not all Australian)..

Learn More Series « from the LibraryStream Blog

Learn More is a series of self-paced discovery entries for library staff interested in venturing out on the social web. Each post is meant as a short introduction to a different social website, tool, or concept. It might not be ground-breaking information to veteran readers of the blogosphere, but I hope each brief summary will act as a gentle nudge for newcomers to social networking.”

Currently, the series includes:

  • Flickr
  • Youtube

This is a series of short explanatory videos covering social media.
